Travel by Auto
Drivers should check specific legal requirements before driving
in France, however, the following gives general guidance: ( NOTE: SWITZERLAND
requires a - Motorway tax (vignette): An annual road tax of
SFr40 is levied on all cars and motorbikes using Swiss motorways.
An additional fee of SFr40 applies to trailers and caravans. The
vignette (sticker) is valid between 1 December of the year preceding
and 31 January of the one following the year printed on the vignette.
These permits, which are available at border crossings, are valid
for multiple re-entry into Switzerland within the duration of the
licensed period. To avoid hold-ups at the frontier, however, it
is advisable to purchase the vignette in advance from the nearest
Switzerland Tourism office. )
Driving Licence
A UK driver's licence is sufficient. International Drivers permit not required
for UK licence holders. It is mandatory to carry a vehicle on hire certificate
(VE103) if driving a lease or hire vehicle. This is usually valid for 12 months
from the date of issue.
Minimum Age
Minimum age to drive a car is 18.
Drink Driving
Alcohol in the bloodstream of 0.5 per cent or more is prohibited.
Driving in excess of the alcohol limit will attract severe penalties
e.g. fine, imprisonment and/or confiscation of driving licence.
Motor Insurance
Third Party insurance compulsory.
Seat Belts
Compulsory for front/rear seat occupants (if fitted).
European Travel Kit
Drivers should take a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, spare
lamp bulbs and snow chains.
If driving a right hand drive vehicle, beam benders/deflectors should be fitted
to headlamps.
Dipped headlights must be used in poor daytime visibility.
GB Sticker
A GB sticker must be placed on the back of any UK registered motor vehicle. Passengers/Children
in Cars
Children under 10 cannot travel as front seat passengers (except
for babies under 9 months in a rear-facing seat).
Road Markings & Speed Limits
Always check road signs for speed limits. Unless indicated by
road signs the speed limits are as follows:
- Built up area - 50km
- Outside built up areas - 90km per hour
- Dual carriageway separated by central reservation - 110km
- Motorways - 130km NB. Lower speed limits apply when driving
in wet conditions (110km per hour) or if a UK driving licence
has been held for less than 2 years. At signed roundabouts
traffic entering the roundabout has priority unless indicated
(usually by a sign bearing the words "Cedez le Passage" or "Vous
n'avz Pas La Priorite").
Fuel
Fuel is much cheaper than in the UK. Payment cards such as credit/charge/debit
are accepted at most petrol stations.
Fine
On the spot fines or "deposits" are severe. Licence
may be confiscated. Always have regard for road signs in particular
those indicating speed limits which may vary from road to road and/or
depending on weather conditions.
Special Features
Whilst breakdown assistance cover is not mandatory it is certainly
recommended. Breakdown charges may be very expensive. If you breakdown
on the motorway look out for emergency telephones located at frequent
intervals along the roadside or at service stations. The following
companies offer continental breakdown cover (click on SX
